Jean Johnson's Sons of Destiny series

I have just finished reading three of the eight Sons of Destiny series books by Jean Johnson and I loved them. Each of the books is about a different couple but all continue the overall story of eight sons , four sets of twins all born with differing Mage powers who have a Prophecy spoken of them many years before their birth , and once they are revealed to be the forseen sibilings are exiled to a Island which also has its own Prophecy , funnily enough that one intertwines with theirs .
While I have only read The Wolf ( Brother number 2) and The Master( brother number 3) and The Song ( Brother number 4, I thoroughly loved them and their women are no push overs either ,I really want to read The Sword (Brother number 1) but only because it sets up how they got there and the rescuing of the first of the brides ( I think she's from our world) You really do not need to have read any of the others to enjoy the books but having done so will only enhance your reading.

McCaffrey & Scarborough's Petaybee and Changeling Twins series

I just finished reading this entire series , having reread the Petaybe series when I realised that there were more covering Yana and Seans children. I would definately recommend this to anyone to read from teenagers just discovering fantasy and books to the more mature reader sick to death of all the goth/vampire novels out at the moment.
I love the fact that the authors - Anne McCaffery and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough don't feel the need to overdo the romance and conspiracy aspects to the story and how despite many trouncings by the sentient planet the Powers that Be never learn - much like the governments now days.
There are six books in this series so far that I have found and not a bad one in the bunch.

Media Book Club reviews irk me

Has anyone else out there been irked by the Media book clubs on the t.v. , radio and in the papers reviewing a book from the middle of a series like book 14 and then giving it a bad review for not enough detail or back story. Should't that kind of review be left to someone who has read the others in the series , especially when it is a ongoing story or character like Reacher in the Lee Child novels or Eve Dallas in the In Death novels , well thats our opinion anyway , If you want to find what made us irked about this look up the First Tuesday Book Club on ABC 1 Australia when they reviewed Gone Tomorrow.

Updating Reading lists

We are about to have a update and a tidy up of the reading lists , to make them easier to find and current with the authors we like.
There are three new ones for Christine Feehan's series one of which is the beginning of a new series associated with the Drake Sisters ( Sea Haven) and we have had some tantalizing hints from Ms Feehan herself that there will be a new Dark novel coming out next year , we are trying to guess who it will be about , the couples we think are possibilities are Zacharias and the girl who got her throat slashed defending his resting place, Skylar and Dimitri or maybe one of the ancients with Lara's recovering aunts .... what do you think ? Or is there someone else we have missed .
Back to the updates there is two new JD Robb's for the In Death series, Sherrilyn Kenyon has started to tell Nick's stories as an adjunct to the Dark Hunters and Maggie Shayne has a new trilogy out that has associated with the Colder than Ice trilogy. Lucky us, lots of new good books to read!

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Steig Larsson

After many recommendations I read this book, which is the first in a trilogy .
As it has been translated from Swedish at first is was a hard slog to get into as it deals with Swedish high finance and politics but once the terminology and references became familiar it got engrossing.
The Characters of Lisbeth Salander ( she of the tattoo) and the main character Mikael Blomdvist
a journalist don't actually meet until halfway into the story though she knows of him before he knows of her.
Only three things bothered me in this book
1. If she's such a good hacker,how come Blomkvist found her home so easily.
2. Alot was referenced to her fighting abilities i.e. kick boxing but when violence was needed she uses baseball bats and golf clubs and tasers - alot of references for nothing.
3. There was also alot of hints as to her background but no solid information - why was her mother in care , why does she have a legal guardian at twenty or so?
Hopefully the above will be resolved in the next part , we can't ask the author.
And while the topics don't make this a nice book it is most definitely a good story , Ive already got the next - The girl who played with fire - ready to read in my book pile.

Lisa Gardner - Hide Review

If you want an engrossing read this books for you.
Written in two alternating points of view , one of a woman who since childhood has had to continually move and change identity without actually knowing why and that of a police sniper turned homicide detective who gets involved when an underground bunker is found with the mummified bodies of six little girls one of which is identified by an engraved necklace as the real name of the first woman.
I really enjoyed this book as the author didn't make the woman unbelievable in her abilites or the police all - knowing as has been the case in other books I have read.
Also the characters have just enough mundane things to do such as work for a living and falling asleep when tired , which makes the action when it happens more real.

Harlan Coben - The Woods Review

I came across this book the other day on the shop shelves and after reading the back blurb decided to read it and was pleased to find another good author to add to my watch list.
This is a multi faceted narrative working from the perspective of a prosecuting district attorney who also has a past history of loss.
The main focus of the story is the disappearance of his sister from a summer camp when they were teenagers, the body of which has never been found but a boy from the camp was convicted of the crime but never admitted to the death involved .
While this happened years ago, it is affecting the present when a rich man trying to blackmail the attorney is trying to dig up dirt, stirs the pot and provokes new evidence and reactions - the story is not what you think.
I really liked this book and subsquently have read another since called "Gone for Good" and have found it equally as good.
The only fault I could find, was to say a caution not to read Mr Cobens books one after another as the stories do tend to bleed together in your mind.

Twilight

While Twilight "the series" was quite good i felt that books 1 - Twilight and 2 - New Moon were a bit bland,but they did provide a good kick off for the last two 3- Breaking Dawn and 4- Eclipse.
I also reckon that there could be a follow up of Renesmee and Jacobs story.

Paranormal Romances are a fast growing genre for those of us wanting a bit more to a romance. With aliens,wizards,vampires and others,there seems to be a "meatier" read. While the physical aspects of each story tend to be hotter in a paranormal,that of course is to expected because when your writing a romantic character in a paranomal they of course are "special" in all areas.

Review Angels Demons

Of all the novels released by Dan Brown that i have read "Angels & Demons" has to be the best while "Da Vinci Code" was lauded about the place. I feel "Angels & Demons" is a more complete and well finished story. Set after the events in "Davinci Code" but using the same protagonist,it is a thriller set against the backdrop of the election of a new pope.
With a well fleshed cast of characters and logical plot lines it is an entertaining and well realized read.

Nation Terry Pratchett Book Review

Why I picked this book up ,long time Terry Pratchett reader and enthusiast,
and it has a cool cover.
What I liked about this book is that you did not have to have read any other
Pratchett novels for it to make sense. Nation is set in an alternate version of
Edwerian times, though for the first half of the book it is set on an island
which could be anywhere. Starting with a tidal wave which decimates the island
home of natives, who are awaiting the return of one of their young boys after a
ritual in which ,when completed he is regarded an adult.
Also caught up in this catastrophic event is a ship ferrying a well educated,
socially instructed, young English girl to her father who is a regional
governer to some unnamed islands and is coincidentally related within counting
distance to the throne of England.

Mau the island boy/man is a very well rounded character to me he is very
logical with how he identifies and problem solves (especially how to obtain the
milk for the baby) where as the 'ghost girl' takes a little longer to warm up
to, though I think this is mainly due to her own awkwardness and unfamiliarity
with the situation, after a while she settles into the storyline.
A particular point of enjoyment for me was the cricket match on the beach
towards the end of the book when the islanders play with the soldiers who came
with the boat, it is so well described that I laughed out loud.
One thing that I like about Terry Pratchett is that his storylines seem to be
well thought out from the get go with no dangling threads and unexplained plot
developments to jar your enjoyment of the tale.
I would recommend this book to anyone, especially someone who has the ability
to see other options in the day to day problems and absurdity in the mundane.
My rating for this book 5 out of 5, there is nothing that I would change at
all.
